Sixteen years. That is sixteen summers and winters. Sixteen birthday mornings. Sixteen years of footsteps following you down the hallway, of a warm presence at your feet while you slept, of eyes that found yours every time you walked through the door.

Ling from Keelung, Taiwan, knows this grief. On September 9, 2025, her beloved dog Huadou — a gentle old girl who had grown into a grandmother over the years — quietly left her side. And what Ling did in the weeks that followed is one of the most tender stories we have ever had the privilege of being part of.

🐶 Meet Huadou — Sixteen Years, a Grandmother's Grace

Huadou. The name itself is warm and playful — Huadou, meaning "flower bean" — and it suited her perfectly. Not because she was small or delicate, but because there was something blossoming and alive in her presence, even in her oldest years.

By the time Huadou left, she had become what Ling lovingly called an old grandmother — a dog who moved through the world with the unhurried grace of a creature who had earned her rest, who had seen much, loved well, and was entirely at peace with where she was.

Sixteen years is extraordinary. It means that Huadou was there for all of it — the ordinary days and the difficult ones, the changes and the constants, the full arc of a significant portion of Ling's life. A dog who has been with you that long isn't just a pet. She is woven into who you are.

When Huadou passed on September 9, 2025, Ling entered the particular stillness that follows the loss of a long companion. And in that stillness, she did something quietly beautiful.

She went to the grooming box.

🧡 A Lock of Fur, A Heart Full of Love

After Huadou passed, Ling found herself tidying — the way people do in grief, hands moving through familiar objects, finding traces of the one who is gone. In the grooming box, she discovered some of Huadou's fur. Soft. Real. Still carrying the warmth and scent of the dog she loved.

Ling gathered it carefully. And then she mailed it to us.

She wanted Huadou to be part of the portrait — not just in appearance, but in substance. She asked us to incorporate some of Huadou's real fur into the piece, so that some part of her dog would literally be held within the work forever.

We receive this request more often than you might expect, and it never stops moving us. When a customer sends us their pet's fur, they are sending us something irreplaceable. They are trusting us with a physical remnant of a life — something that cannot be reproduced or replaced.

We treat it accordingly. For Huadou's portrait, we placed her fur at the heart position — the center of the chest, where a heartbeat lives. It is a small detail that no one else will ever see. But Ling will always know it is there. And that knowledge — that Huadou's real self is held within the piece — changes everything about what the portrait means.

When Huadou's fur arrived at our studio, it was still fragrant. Still warm with the memory of her. We held it for a moment before we began, and we thought of all the hands that had touched it — Ling's hands, and before that, the grooming box, and before that, Huadou herself.

🎀 Two Ways to Always Have Her Near

Ling came to us with a clear and deeply considered wish. She didn't just want a portrait to hang on the wall. She wanted Huadou to be able to travel with her — to be present not only at home, but wherever life took her. Near or far, on ordinary days and on journeys.

So she commissioned two pieces: a custom wool felted portrait of Huadou, and a wool felted pendant ornament — a small, wearable version of Huadou that could be carried in a bag, attached to keys, or held in a pocket.

The portrait gives Huadou a permanent home — a place where Ling can sit with her, look at her, feel her presence in a room. The pendant gives Huadou wings. It means that wherever Ling goes, Huadou comes too. On every errand and every adventure, on every day she misses her most, Huadou is right there.
