Sixteen Years of Love โ€” How a Custom Wool Felted Portrait Brought Huadou Home Again

A tribute to Huadou, a beloved dog from Keelung, Taiwan โ€” who walked beside Ling for sixteen years, and whose fur now rests forever close to her heart.

๐ŸŒพ Sixteen Years Is a Whole Life Together

There is a particular kind of grief that comes only after many years. It is not the sharp, sudden grief of an unexpected loss. It is slower, heavier, and in some ways more profound โ€” because it carries the weight of every single day you shared.

Sixteen years. That is sixteen summers and winters. Sixteen birthday mornings. Sixteen years of footsteps following you down the hallway, of a warm presence at your feet while you slept, of eyes that found yours every time you walked through the door.

When a dog has been with you for sixteen years, losing them doesn't just leave a silence. It rearranges the shape of everything. The house feels different. The routines feel hollow. And the love โ€” all that accumulated, layered, wordless love โ€” suddenly has nowhere to go.

Ling from Keelung, Taiwan, knows this grief. On September 9, 2025, her beloved dog Huadou โ€” a gentle old girl who had grown into a grandmother over the years โ€” quietly left her side. And what Ling did in the weeks that followed is one of the most tender stories we have ever had the privilege of being part of.

๐Ÿถ Meet Huadou โ€” Sixteen Years, a Grandmother's Grace

Huadou. The name itself is warm and playful โ€” Huadou, meaning "flower bean" โ€” and it suited her perfectly. Not because she was small or delicate, but because there was something blossoming and alive in her presence, even in her oldest years.

By the time Huadou left, she had become what Ling lovingly called an old grandmother โ€” a dog who moved through the world with the unhurried grace of a creature who had earned her rest, who had seen much, loved well, and was entirely at peace with where she was.

Sixteen years is extraordinary. It means that Huadou was there for all of it โ€” the ordinary days and the difficult ones, the changes and the constants, the full arc of a significant portion of Ling's life. A dog who has been with you that long isn't just a pet. She is woven into who you are.

When Huadou passed on September 9, 2025, Ling entered the particular stillness that follows the loss of a long companion. And in that stillness, she did something quietly beautiful.

She went to the grooming box.

"Sixteen years is not just time โ€” it's a whole life built together, one ordinary day at a time."

๐Ÿงก A Lock of Fur, A Heart Full of Love

After Huadou passed, Ling found herself tidying โ€” the way people do in grief, hands moving through familiar objects, finding traces of the one who is gone. In the grooming box, she discovered some of Huadou's fur. Soft. Real. Still carrying the warmth and scent of the dog she loved.

Ling gathered it carefully. And then she mailed it to us.

She wanted Huadou to be part of the portrait โ€” not just in appearance, but in substance. She asked us to incorporate some of Huadou's real fur into the piece, so that some part of her dog would literally be held within the work forever.

We receive this request more often than you might expect, and it never stops moving us. When a customer sends us their pet's fur, they are sending us something irreplaceable. They are trusting us with a physical remnant of a life โ€” something that cannot be reproduced or replaced.

We treat it accordingly. For Huadou's portrait, we placed her fur at the heart position โ€” the center of the chest, where a heartbeat lives. It is a small detail that no one else will ever see. But Ling will always know it is there. And that knowledge โ€” that Huadou's real self is held within the piece โ€” changes everything about what the portrait means.

When Huadou's fur arrived at our studio, it was still fragrant. Still warm with the memory of her. We held it for a moment before we began, and we thought of all the hands that had touched it โ€” Ling's hands, and before that, the grooming box, and before that, Huadou herself.

"When Huadou's fur arrived, it was still fragrant โ€” as if she had just been there."

๐ŸŽ€ Two Ways to Always Have Her Near

Ling came to us with a clear and deeply considered wish. She didn't just want a portrait to hang on the wall. She wanted Huadou to be able to travel with her โ€” to be present not only at home, but wherever life took her. Near or far, on ordinary days and on journeys.

So she commissioned two pieces: a custom wool felted portrait of Huadou, and a wool felted pendant ornament โ€” a small, wearable version of Huadou that could be carried in a bag, attached to keys, or held in a pocket.

The portrait gives Huadou a permanent home โ€” a place where Ling can sit with her, look at her, feel her presence in a room. The pendant gives Huadou wings. It means that wherever Ling goes, Huadou comes too. On every errand and every adventure, on every day she misses her most, Huadou is right there.

Together, the two pieces form something complete: a memorial that doesn't ask you to stay home to feel close to your pet. A love that travels.

โœ‚๏ธ Our Process: Every Detail, Every Step, Every Heartbeat

At @woolfeltedpet_usa_asia, working on a commission like Huadou's feels like a responsibility we carry with both hands. You are trusting us not just with photographs, but in Ling's case, with something even more precious โ€” the actual physical remnant of your beloved companion. We approach every piece with the care that trust deserves.

Here is how our process worked for Huadou, from the first message to the moment the pieces arrived at Ling's door:

๐Ÿ“ธ
Step 1 โ€” Photo Review & Deep Communication

We begin by carefully studying every photo provided โ€” coat color, texture, markings, posture, expression, and the particular qualities that made this animal unmistakably themselves. For Huadou, we paid close attention to the dignified, gentle presence of an older dog โ€” the softness in the eyes, the calm of a creature who had lived fully and loved well. We ask questions. We listen. We want to understand not just how your pet looked, but who they were.

๐Ÿงถ
Step 2 โ€” Sculpting Begins

Our artisans begin the process of needle felting โ€” building form layer by layer, entirely by hand, using barbed needles to interlock wool fibers into a three-dimensional shape. For Huadou, we were creating two pieces simultaneously: the portrait and the pendant. Each required its own careful attention โ€” the portrait capturing the full presence and weight of Huadou, the pendant distilling her essence into something small enough to carry.

๐Ÿพ
Step 3 โ€” The Fur at the Heart

This step is unique to commissions like Huadou's. When a customer chooses to include their pet's real fur in the portrait, we handle it with the utmost care. For Huadou, we placed a small amount of her fur at the heart position โ€” the center of the chest โ€” before completing the final layers. It is invisible from the outside, but it is there. Real. Permanent. A piece of Huadou that will always be held within the piece, close to where a heartbeat would be.

๐Ÿ“น
Step 4 โ€” Progress Updates Throughout

We share photos and videos with the customer throughout the process โ€” checking in, asking for feedback, making sure what we're building truly matches the pet the customer carries in their memory. Every adjustment is welcome. We keep working until it feels exactly right, from every angle, in every detail.

โœ…
Step 5 โ€” We Ship Only When You Say Yes

Our rule is simple and absolute: we never ship until the customer is completely satisfied. Not when we think it's ready. Not when it looks right to us. Only when Ling looked at Huadou's portrait and pendant and said โ€” yes, that's her. That moment is the only moment that matters.

Ling shared the moment on Instagram โ€” and her words moved us deeply.

The Moment Huadou Came Home

When the package arrived in Keelung, Ling filmed the unboxing and shared it on her Instagram account, tagging @woolfeltedpet_usa_asia. We watched that video with our whole hearts.

And then we read what she wrote.

"ๆฏ›็ตจ็ตจ็š„่Šฑ่ฑ†ๅ›žไพ†ไบ†
ๆปฟๆปฟ็š„ๆ„Ÿๅ‹•
ๆˆ‘็š„ๅพ่Šฑ่ฑ†่€ๅฅถๅฅถ
ๅชฝๅชฝๆƒณไฝ ไบ†"

"Fluffy little Huadou has come back.
So deeply moved.
My dear old grandmother Huadou.
Mum misses you so much."

Ling, Keelung, Taiwan

"็œŸ็š„่ฆบๅพ—ๅฅนๅ›žไพ†ไบ† โ€” It really felt like she had come back."

We have been making these portraits for a long time. We have read many beautiful words from customers who have received their pieces. But "ๆฏ›็ตจ็ตจ็š„่Šฑ่ฑ†ๅ›žไพ†ไบ†" โ€” Fluffy little Huadou has come back โ€” stopped us completely.

Because that is it. That is exactly what we are trying to give people. Not a copy. Not a likeness. But the feeling โ€” however brief, however gentle โ€” that the one you lost is somehow, in some form, still here. Still soft. Still warm. Still yours.

Ling also shared with us the words that followed, in private โ€” words that we carry with us every day now:

"็œŸ็š„้€™ๅ€‹็ฅž้Ÿป้€™ๅ€‹ๅงฟๆ…‹ไธ€ๆจกๆจกไธ€ๆจฃๆจฃ๏ผŒไธ€็›ดๆณจ่ฆ–่‘—ๅฅน๏ผŒ็œŸ็š„่ฆบๅพ—ๅฅนๅ›žไพ†ไบ†ใ€‚"

"Truly, the spirit and the posture are exactly the same โ€” I keep looking at her, and I really feel like she has come back."

Ling, Keelung, Taiwan

The spirit and the posture, exactly the same. We read those words and felt the full weight of what it means to do this work well. Not just to replicate a shape, but to capture a spirit โ€” the particular way an animal held themselves in the world, the feeling they carried with them, the presence that made them irreplaceable.

Passing the Love Forward

Before we close, we want to share something Ling wrote to us that we will never forget. After receiving Huadou's portrait and pendant, after watching the unboxing video and feeling all that emotion arrive at once, she sent us these words:

"ๅธŒๆœ›้€š้Ž้€™ไฝœๅ“ๅ’Œๆ•…ไบ‹ๆŠŠ้€™ไปฝๆ„›็นผ็บŒๅ‚ณ้žไธ‹ๅŽป๏ผŒ่ฌ่ฌไฝ ่ฎ“ๆ›ดๅคšไบบๆ„Ÿๅˆฐ็พŠๆฏ›ๆฏกๅธถไพ†็š„ๆบซๆš–ใ€‚"

"I hope that through this work and this story, this love can continue to be passed on. Thank you for letting more people feel the warmth that wool felt brings."

Ling, Keelung, Taiwan

We read those words and felt something shift. Because Ling wasn't just thanking us โ€” she was doing something generous and brave. She was choosing to share her grief and her love publicly, so that someone else โ€” maybe you, reading this right now โ€” might find comfort in knowing that this kind of memorial is possible. That there is a way to keep someone close after they are gone. That love, shaped carefully in wool and care and a lock of real fur pressed against a felt heartbeat, can travel.

That is what Ling gave us by sharing Huadou's story. And it is what we hope to pass on to you.

To Ling: thank you. For trusting us with Huadou's fur, with her spirit, with this story. For letting us be part of how you carry her forward. Your words will reach people we will never meet, and they will help those people feel less alone in their grief, and more certain that honoring a lost pet this way is a beautiful and worthy thing to do.

To Huadou โ€” gentle old grandmother, flower bean, beloved girl โ€” we hope we held you with the care you deserved. ๐Ÿพ
